'Flowers of the Field was originally published in 1853 and subsequently, well into the 20th century. The author, the Rev. Charles Alexander Johns was a 19th-century British botanist and educator who was the author of a long series of popular books on natural history.

Johns' important botanical work often referred to as 'the bible of the amateur botanist', illustrated with ninety-six coloured plates. This work ran more than fifty editions, such was its popularity. It describes the plants of Britain, with their common and Latin names and their uses. The author also published a number of works on botany and natural history, such as 'Forest Trees of Britain', 'Sea Weeds' and 'The Cottage Flower Garden.'
